Benefits of Homeschooling – The Best Reasons to Homeschool!

Thinking about homeschooling? Knowing the benefits of homeschooling can be helpful! And, it’s a big decision! But, it can be the most wonderful decision you’ll ever make for your family.
I’ve put together a list of some of the top benefits of homeschooling. These benefits are from personal experience, from other homeschooling parents and from my endless research on all things homeschool related!
Disclaimer: The benefits of homeschooling can be very personal and varied! Also, while I am “team homeschool” for our family, I have the utmost respect for ALL teachers and decisions parents make for educating their children.
Top benefits of homeschooling:
Customized/Personalized Learning
This may be a totally obvious benefit of homeschooling but it’s worth listing. It’s probably one of the best parts of homeschool life – do what works best for you and your kids! What you teach & learn as well as how you teach & learn together is completely up to you!
Also, probably one of the most rewarding aspects of choosing to homeschool, is the customized pace of your child’s learning. This is so beneficial in different ways and not likely to happen in traditional school settings.
For instance, if your kiddo excels in one subject, they can keep on moving with that subject, not having to wait for the rest of the class to move ahead with work.
If your kiddo needs more help with learning their multiplication facts, or with reading comprehension, or whatever it may be, you can take all the time they need. Without them falling “behind” or worse, being pushed ahead without actually learning.
Not teaching to “test” meaning you are teaching your child to actually learn, and not to pass a test, is such a gift for your child.
You can also delve deep into topics that your kids are super interested in, and incorporate these areas into unit studies. Something that is not easily done in a traditional school setting.
Flexibility in LIFE

The best benefit of homeschooling, in my (and many other homeschool parents’!) opinion is the flexibility it gives to your whole family life.
Some even call it freedom! I say flexibility because it’s more than freedom to me. Yes, you are free to choose what to study and when and how. But you are also able to make your schedule work for you, instead of trying to keep up with your schedule.
Our society thrives on and seems to put being busy on a pedestal. Following along with that notion and keeping busy for the sake of being busy can create a really rigid, not enjoyable life for your whole family.
Enter homeschooling!
Yes, you will most likely have a schedule you put together when you’re planning your homeschool year. And yes, you will most likely have your kids enrolled in a sport or two or art class or take part in a homeschool co-op.
Add in home related tasks like groceries, meal planning, house cleaning and then things like appointments outside the home. This can all definitely make your life busy!
But the beauty in homeschooling is you can be flexible, and bend & stretch your schooling when needed to make it all work.
You can schedule your kids’ dentist appointments first thing on a Monday when there will probably be no waiting time. Make your trip to the grocery store each week a field trip to teach your kids about budgeting and meal planning, enriching their learning & your school days.
Visit grandparents and family whenever you want, and not just wait for weekends. You can take vacations or go on field trips during “off peak” times of the year. A lot of money can be saved by traveling during the traditional school year!
Safe, comfortable learning environment
Another big benefit of homeschooling is you get to create the safe, nurturing environment where your children will learn and grow.
Giving your children a sense of security each day, allowing them to feel totally comfortable during childhood, allowing them to gain a love of learning creates the most beautiful life & education for your kids.
It also helps them gain much needed confidence in who they are & of their abilities.
Being compared to others daily or encountering or witnessing bullying and other bad behavior that may be present in a traditional school, takes the focus off of learning.
Homeschool perk – you can choose where your children spend time outside of your home and who they spend it with.
Making sure your children are involved with some activities outside of the home will give them the space to explore social situations with peers on their own, in a safe environment.
Of course you can’t shelter your child for life. But, why not give them a head start for all sorts of success in life by giving them the confidence that homeschool brings.
Health benefits
Along with a safe learning environment, homeschool can also have many benefits for your children’s health.
Mental health
There is less of a chance of exposure of the social comparisons, bullying and overall negative behaviors that many children have issues with in traditional schools, when you homeschool.
The same goes for school induced anxiety or stress that may be affecting your child. Trying to keep up, or maintain a certain level of achievement can easily take over and cause more harm than good.
If your child is really struggling with stress, having the benefit of flexibility to help your child is a wonderful gift homeschooling brings.
Physical health
As I mentioned above, you can’t shelter your child (forever anyway haha!), but you can keep them out of classrooms full of germs during sick season!
When your kiddo is under the weather, they can really REST and take the time needed to actually get better. You don’t have to worry about them missing work or having to make assignments up or about missing too many school days.
To help prevent getting rundown, you can make sure to take breaks when needed. Everyone can get outside & move each day. Sunshine, stretching & fresh air are some of the best remedies out there!
Sleep can also be prioritized, something that is so needed for growing bodies!
Keeping healthy while homeschooling is also sometimes easier because your kids will have access to fresh foods (no shame on packed lunches!) and as much water as they need throughout the day.
Strengthen sibling & family relationships

Another amazing perk to homeschool life is the close relationship you and your kids will develop with each other. Growing up in a close knit family adds to that confidence that homeschool gives to your child.
If you have multiple children the relationship that can grow between them is such a gift for them. One that they will hopefully bring into adulthood.
Learning and growing together every day, and making fun memories will create such a great foundation for siblings to be lifelong friends. As parents, isn’t that the most wonderful thing to see?
TIME!!
Maybe I should have said this is my favorite on the list of benefits of homeschooling. TIME! Precious, fleeting time that seems to go faster and faster every day.
Guess what? With homeschool you get more of it!
More time together as a family.
And more time with extended family.
And for things like art, music, cooking, playing outside.
More time to experience things in life, like reading wonderful books aloud each day, embracing the seasons changing with fun activities, nature walks, and field trips, and time for science experiments!
Lean into the benefits of homeschool!
Hope this list of some of the benefits that homeschool brings to your life inspires you to take that leap if you’re considering homeschooling your own kids! Or, if you are already homeschooling, I hope it reminds you of the amazing life homeschooling can bring to your family. Also, I hope it gives you encouragement for the days when you need it most 🙂
